Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about US salary calculations

?How does US income tax work?

The US uses a progressive federal tax system with seven tax brackets. Most states also have their own income tax rates, and FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare) are deducted from your paycheck.

?What are FICA taxes?

FICA stands for Federal Insurance Contributions Act. It includes Social Security tax (6.2% up to a limit) and Medicare tax (1.45% with no limit). Your employer matches these contributions.

?Do all states have income tax?

No. Seven states have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. New Hampshire and Tennessee only tax investment income.

?How do state taxes affect my take-home pay?

State income tax rates vary widely, from 0% to over 13% in some states. Our calculators include both federal and state tax calculations for accurate take-home pay estimates.

?What about deductions and credits?

Our calculators use standard deductions, but you may qualify for additional deductions or credits based on your situation. Consider consulting a tax professional for complex scenarios.
