Wales Second Job Calculator

How Your Second Job Is Taxed in Wales

If you work a second job in Wales, HMRC usually assumes you’ve already used your personal allowance in your main job. As a result, your second job is taxed using flat-rate codes like CBR, CD0, or CD1. This calculator uses 2024/25 thresholds to estimate your take-home pay after tax, NI, and other deductions from a second source of income.

Second Job Tax Codes in Wales

HMRC assigns different tax codes for second jobs to prevent duplication of the personal allowance:

- **CBR (Cymru Basic Rate):** All income taxed at 20%

- **CD0 (Cymru Higher Rate):** All income taxed at 40%

- **CD1 (Cymru Additional Rate):** All income taxed at 45%

These codes apply flat tax rates to all your income from the second job, without any tax-free allowance. If your employer is using one of these codes, this calculator will give you an accurate take-home estimate for that job alone.

National Insurance Contributions (NICs)

NICs are assessed separately for each job. If your second job pays above the monthly Primary Threshold, you’ll owe 8% in NICs on applicable earnings. Even if your overall earnings are modest, you might still owe NI on both jobs. The calculator factors this into your second job deductions.

Pension Contributions

Some second jobs enroll you into a workplace pension scheme, especially if you earn above auto-enrolment thresholds. Pension contributions reduce your taxable income and affect take-home pay. Our calculator lets you include a pension rate to see the adjusted net salary.

Student Loan Repayments

Repayments apply once your income exceeds your repayment plan’s threshold (Plan 1, Plan 2, or Postgraduate). Since employers assess your income separately, you may repay too much when working two jobs. HMRC reviews this at year-end. The calculator only estimates repayments based on the second job’s income.

Who Should Use This Tool

Whether you’re taking on weekend shifts, a freelance gig, or additional part-time work, this calculator helps you understand how tax, NI, pensions, and student loans affect your second income in Wales. It’s especially useful for budgeting when juggling multiple roles.

At the end of the tax year, HMRC reconciles your total income. This tool gives you insight into what you’ll receive per pay period from your second job before that reconciliation.
